The Perspective of Those Who Live and Work Here
I have been living and working in Dubai for more than twenty years. During this time, I have seen the city go through crises that would have left deep scars on many other economies. Yet each time, Dubai has demonstrated an extraordinary ability to respond, emerging from challenges stronger and with renewed prospects for growth. This is not rhetoric: it is something I have witnessed firsthand.
In recent days, I have read several articles published in the international press. Headlines and commentary that understandably may raise concerns or lead to differing interpretations. For this reason, I felt it would be useful to share a few observations based on the daily reality experienced by those who live and work here.
A City That Continues to Function
In everyday life, there is no sense of paralysis. Offices remain open, companies continue to operate, and economic activity moves forward as usual. Walking through office districts during lunchtime, you still find busy restaurants, professionals meeting for business, and a city maintaining its normal rhythm.
Last week I attended a private event organized by a colleague, with more than one hundred attendees including lawyers, consultants, and entrepreneurs who have lived in the Emirates for many years. The atmosphere was not that of a community preparing to leave the country, but rather one accustomed to approaching complex situations with pragmatism. Conversations ranged from current challenges to new projects and future opportunities.
Those who have left Dubai in recent weeks have mainly been people who were here temporarily: tourists or professionals in transit. This is a natural reaction during periods of uncertainty. The situation is different for those who have built a business, a family, or a professional path here. For them, life continues largely as before.
Managing Challenging Times
One of the aspects most often mentioned by those living in the UAE is the ability of the institutions to manage challenging situations effectively. Over the years, Dubai has faced complex moments, from the global financial crisis of 2008 to the pandemic, demonstrating remarkable speed in decision-making and a strong capacity to adapt.
Even today, government services continue to operate efficiently. Administrative procedures, including those related to visas and company authorizations, are progressing without significant delays. Free zones remain fully operational, while programs such as the Golden Visa, initiatives for freelancers, and the ongoing digitalization of public services continue to evolve.
This administrative continuity helps maintain strong confidence among the international community and among businesses that have chosen Dubai as a base for their activities.
Perception from Abroad vs. Daily Reality
In recent days I have frequently received calls from friends and colleagues across Europe. The questions are often the same: What is the situation like? Is it safe to stay? Does it still make sense to relocate or invest here?
Observing daily life on the ground, the answer is clear: Dubai remains a resilient city, supported by world-class infrastructure and an economic environment that continues to attract international professionals and businesses. The expat community, which has been present in the Emirates for many years, remains active, well-established, and engaged.
Of course, perceptions can shift quickly, especially in a globally uncertain environment. Yet the economic and social life of the city continues with remarkable continuity.
The Lesson of Twenty Years
After more than two decades in Dubai, one lesson stands out clearly: this city tends to reward those who choose to stay during times of uncertainty. When confidence returns, and historically it always has here, those who continued to invest their time, work, and relationships are often the ones best positioned to benefit.
For this reason, for those who have built their professional lives here, the choice today does not appear to be about leaving, but rather about continuing to look forward.
Anyone interested in understanding the situation more clearly can always speak directly with those who live and work here. Often, daily reality tells a more nuanced and less alarming story than the one reflected in headlines.
